Elizabeth was as certain as Georgiana that the writing was that of Mr. Darcy. Her heart had gone cold at the thought that he was to steal back a fortune from under the nose of the French Emperor.

Why, he might take months, just finding out where it was even hidden.

She saw that Georgiana had also thought of the danger her brother was in, and she stepped in to try and reassure her.

“I think, Georgiana, that we might need to remain here for the time being.” She glanced at the Colonel before addressing the girl again. “Might it be a good idea to use the services of your governess to improve our own French? Then we could prevail upon your cousin to allow us to subscribe to the newspapers that cover the war.”

Georgiana looked up at her gratefully. “I think it is a very good idea, Elizabeth. I am not sure Fitzwilliam will approve, but I will be happy to endure his wrath, for it will mean he is home safely.”

“Bravo!” Elizabeth smiled at her. “Spoken as a true lady.”

“I think if we are finished with dinner, we could withdraw.” Elizabeth glanced at the Colonel. He would probably relish a few moments before joining them.
